Take a break from store-bought tomato sauce and make it at home. You can easily make delicious tomato sauce at home in your crock-pot. So the next time you are making pasta or pizza or any other dish that required tomato sauce, you can use your homemade one and feel like a chef.
The recipe is simple and the results are remarkable. Below are all the details you will need to create your own brand of tomato sauce.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 4 hours
Total Time: A little over 4 hours
Yield: 2 32-ounce jars 1x
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
½ cup onion (diced)
1 tablespoon basil
1 carrot, grated (½ cup)
2 garlic cloves (peeled and thinly sliced)
2 28-ounce cans of tomatoes (crushed, whole, or diced)
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar (as per your preference)
Add the ingredients mentioned above into a 6-quart crock-pot. Put the lid on top and let it cook on slow fire for about 4-6 hours. Stir it occasionally.
If you have used the whole tomatoes, you will notice their peel coming off, remove them. Once you do that, continue cooking for 1-2 hours more until you see that the sauce has thickened.
For the sauce to be smooth, the next step would be to remove it from the crock-pot and run it through a food mill. After this blend it in a blender or you can also use an immersion blender.
After you see that the sauce has become nice and smooth, set it aside to cool down to room temperature and then refrigerate unused sauce.
Be sure to use it within 4 days.
The best way to preserve the sauce for a longer time is by freezing it in an airtight container or zip bag. You can use it for up to 2 months.
